Secretary of the Navy, Donald C. Winter gave an address honoring the Navy for its 233rd birthday since its creation on October 13, 2008. The Navy has grown from a small vessel of 80 men and 10 guns to the leading military unit that it is today. The Navy is one of the most remarkable and powerful in the world, rivaling and complimenting the British Navy, whom they have fought alongside in multiple world wars in the past century. In addition, it was President Theodore Roosevelt himself who sent out sixteen American ships across the world on a fourteen month journey showing the world that America was now one of the greatest naval powers in the world.
Since then, the American Navy has continued to grow and protect the waters of this country against all foreign oppressors who would dare to approach our shores. In addition, the Navy has responded to numerous incidents overseas, and continues to support American troops and navies of this world in fighting against any oppression. The U.S. Navy has also responded many times to provide relief and support to dozens of countries around the world, and is ready to assist.
