Walk Tall and Carry a Big Stick: the Navy Police

Looking for a job where you can assert authority and maintain order? Military police, including Navy police officers, often have to maintain law and order in some of the roughest areas of the world. Military Police are in charge of protecting other military personnel who are in dangerous situations and need some sort of security. Military police are in high demand in all branches of the armed forces, which include the US Army, US Navy, US Marine Corps, US Air force, US Coast Guard and US National Guard.

Training for Navy Police Officers

While a person may enlist with aspirations of becoming a US Navy or National Guard Police Officer, it is during their first few weeks of training, supervisors will determine which individuals qualify for a police career and which individuals should seek other jobs within the military. In addition to 9 weeks of basic training, military policemen require an additional 12 or more weeks of additional training, that focuses not only on field experience but also on classroom training.

US Navy Police Positions

Military police officers patrol and guard entrance to military bases, travel with military road patrols and serve as aerial surveillance during aerial transportation. Naval police conduct shore patrols along US water borders. Many military police officers, including National Guard Military Police officers, perform their duties on foot, whether guarding the entrance to an area, directing visitors at military installations or serving on the main battleground. Obtaining the job of a military policeman also prepares the individual for a civilian law enforcement career if they should choose to leave the military.
