USS Ponce Makes Haste Toward Gulf

Third Of Huge Assault Ships Nears Gulf To Bring US Navy Aid The work of the US Navy in helping out in the Gulf of Mexico continues, as the heavy assault vessel USS Ponce steams toward the Gulf of Mexico at high speed. The ship left Naval Station Norfolk on September 14th to reach the Gulf as soon as possible, working to join its sister ships the USS Bataan and the USS Nassau. The Mayor of Galveston recently took up station aboard the USS Nassau using it as a mobile command station for overseeing the rescue and recovery effort from aboard ship. The use of the heavy assault ships in the rescue operations has been welcomed with open arms by the civilian authorities. Each of the three ships has the ability to generate power, and to produce larger amounts of fresh drinking water if needed. The USS Bataan has been ordered to remain on deck, while it is not actually at the Gulf it is nearby, and stands ready to assist if needed. The USS Nassau is already on scene, and the USS Ponce is headed toward the Gulf at full speed. Each of the three ships were ordered to be prepared and ready as of September 12th, to be utilized if necessary for the recovery effort.
