If you’ve always loved music as a hobby or have professional experience as a musician, but want something a little extra, consider a career in the US Navy. In the US Navy, you’ll be able to travel the world and serve your country, all while playing in one of the most elite ensembles in the world.
Using Your Talent for the Greater Good
To qualify for this US Navy career, you’ll need to already know something about music, such as the ability to play an instrument and sight-read. But don’t worry, you don’t have to be perfect—that’s where the US Navy comes in. After you spend time training to be a sailor, you’ll go to the Armed Forces School of Music in Virginia where you’ll receive instructions on composition, conducting, transposing, learning to play in an ensemble and even receive private lessons. You’ll even be eligible to earn college credit for your music training in the US Navy. After you complete your time at the school, you’ll be assigned to a US Navy ensemble where you’ll play for religious ceremonies, US Navy ceremonies or simply to entertain your fellow sailors. A Note Above the Rest
After your time in the US Navy, you’ll be eligible for a wide array of jobs in the civilian world, from playing professionally in ensembles to privately teaching music. If you’re ready to enter college, you can use the college credits you’ve earned in the US Military to jumpstart your college career and continue studying music, or leave it as a hobby while you study something else.
