The Navy is Going Green

The Department of the Navy Energy Program has begun in earnest to work hard at reducing the consumption of oil and other power related items in an effort to save energy and improve efficiency. This is important in order to make the Navy efficient for the 21st century and make the first of many steps in making the Navy more eco-friendly. Albeit a small step, the federal goals of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and Executive Order 13423 is making significant headway as the Navy has already managed to save 37,446 barrels of fuel in 2007 alone. This has managed to save over $3.6 million dollars and over $400 million as compared to 1985. The armed forces is one of the biggest users of fuels in the United States and yet has managed to make significant efficiency steps in changing how they used energy without affecting their work. It is expected that the $5 million that has been allotted to make these improvements has already saved the Navy in the amount it initially spent and will continue to earn back the initial investment many times over, thereby furthering the efficiency the Navy is expecting to accomplish.
