Navy Vessel USS Carl Brashear Launched

New Ship Of The Line Christened The US Navy has welcomed a new ship in the Lewis and Clark class of vessels, the new USS Carl Brashear. It is a ship that was named in honor of the first Chief Petty Officer Carl Brashear who was the first African American to serve as a Navy Master diver. The new US Navy ship will be in service as soon as it is finished with supplementary equipment installation. It is named after a brave Servicemember that participated in opening up US Navy diving as an occupation for African American US Citizens. For many years African Americans were excluded and prevented from participation as US Navy Divers. CPO Brashear changed all that, and since his service in the 1960s the US Navy has been open to black individuals who choose diving as an enlisted specialty. The keynote speaker for the ship christening ceremony was Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy MCPO Joe Campa Jr. MCPO Campa talked eloquently about how the US Navy itself was made better by the sacrifices and service of CPO Carl Brashear, and his challenging the existing system opened up Navy diving for everyone that seeks to participate, regardless of race, and allowing many talented people to participate since that time.
