Everyone sees the huge USS Navy vessels when they pull into homeport, or when they are featured on the nightly news. News from the Iraqi frontlines even sometimes will feature some of the Aircraft Carriers and vessels that are part of the United States Fleet.
But what most people don’t view is how the US Navy Hull Maintenance Technician keeps the fleet at high military operating status.
The Hull Maintenance technician is the person responsible for making sure that the condition and operational readiness of the fleet is maintained, by ensuring that the different hull structures are in tip top condition.
Working as a Hull Maintenance technician is a job that involves a lot of inspection, and not destructive metal testing to make sure that the condition of the hull is fully operational. Sometimes there will be areas of the hull that are beginning to weaken, or show signs of decomposition, and it is the responsibility of the Hull technician to seek out and repair these areas.
Another duty in the US Navy Hull technician area is making sure that different shipboard structures are installed, repaired, or fabricated. They also deal with piping and plumbing systems, and serve as a support crewmember for the deck force to make sure that the vessel is well maintained.
