Are you too young or too old?
If you are younger than 17 years or older than 34, say “bon voyage” or “sayonara” to your navy career … you’ve missed the boat! Then again, if you’re between 18 and 39 years of age, you could always apply to the US Navy Reserve. Of course 17-year olds will need parental written permission to join.
Are you a legitimate US citizen?
If you’ve got full US citizenship; possess a valid Social Security Card as a US “non-citizen national”; or have “permanent resident alien” status – you are eligible to apply for US Navy enlistment.
Are you single or married?
The US Navy will welcome you either way. To qualify however, you must have no more than one dependent although, in special circumstances, the navy may grant you a waiver, if you have no more than two dependents.
Are you educated enough?
The minimum qualifications required for ‘new recruit enlistment’ is a High School Diploma Graduate (HSDG). This must also be supported by minimum ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) test scores of 35/50 QT with/without a high school diploma.
Are you physically fit to join?
Perhaps, this is the most important requirement to qualify. If you meet the US Navy’s minimum ‘height/weight’ standards; are free of any serious ailment/s; possess good all-round health; pass a comprehensive, medical test at a MEPS – Military Entrance Processing Station – you’ll be in a good position to qualify.
