Explosive Career as a Machinist Mate – Weapons

The United States Navy is known for many things including the use of the most technologically advanced submarines on the planet. These submarines continue to set the tone for the rest of the military Navies around the world. Part of what makes the submarines so impressive is their ability to launch missiles and other munitions at a moment’s notice. Making this possible is the job of the machinist mate – weapons in the US Navy.

What You Will Do

There are two main systems you will work with when you are a machinist mate – weapons. You will work with the hydraulic and the compressed air launch systems. You will be in charge of maintaining the systems as well as handling torpedoes and missiles among other things. You will be in charge of loading, unloading, and shipping of all munitions as well as maintaining the systems which will be used for firing the weapons.

Getting the Job

This is one of the few jobs in the Navy you will not be guaranteed when you go through basic military training. This is because you will first have to volunteer for working as a submarine machinist mate. As you go through training, you will be selected for either auxilary or weapons.
